PCOS (ep.1)

The full name of PCOS is Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome. Some people may have heard of it, some may not. For female folks who often have dysmenorrhea(classic symptom include low abdominal pain), this term is probably familiar.

Q1. What kind of disease is PCOS?

A1. PCOS is a kind of endocrine disorder, leading to Infertility, insulin resistance, Obesity, cardiovascular and other issues. It is a multi-gene, multi-factor, systemic, inflammatory, steroid disorder, Autoimmune disease.

You may want to say "English please~" , but don't worry, there will be  plain and detailed explanations later. For now, just understand that it mainly makes you fat, and infertile.

Q2. What exactly is messing with our body that leads to PCOS?

A2. Scientists and doctors Have not yet found a real pathogenesis, but it has been universally observed in countless patients that there is a High concentration of androgens.

The source of this increased androgen comes from the increased pulse strength and frequency of LH (Luteinizing hormone) in the patient's body, which is also indirectly affected by GnRH (Hypothalamic Gonadotropin-releasing Hormone).

To put it simply, although it is impossible to figure out the whole picture, at least we know for sure that some hormones are making all the troubles.
Q3. What symptoms will I get if I have PCOS?

A3. Here are some common Symptoms:

1. Hirsutism (excessive body hair), Acne (several pimples), and androgenetic alopecia (bald) caused by High androgen levels. In severe cases, there may be a deepening of the voice and Clitoral enlargement.
2. Polycystic ovaries, literally, is used to describe a patient who, under ultrasound examination, has ovaries Filled with immature follicles.
3. Obesity, often accompanied by Hyperinsulinemia(too much insulin in blood) and insulin resistance(body not utilizing insulin).

Weird, doesn't insulin specifically Convert blood sugar into glycogen for storage? Why do obese people have a lot of it in their bodies? The answer is that  insulin in their bodies is Abundant yet useless. The muscle and fat tissues of PCOS patients are less sensitivity to insulin. The Pancreas, which is mainly responsible for producing insulin finds it strange: though it produced a lot but the blood sugar just wouldn't drop . So it worked even more vigorously, not knowing  its product was rejected by muscle and fat tissues.  As the result, all those insulin piled up  in the body.
